Walk into any electronics market in Delhi NCR — Nehru Place, Gaffar, or your local Noida Sector 18 market — and you will see walls of CCTV cameras at every price. Dome, bullet, PTZ, Wi-Fi, 2MP, 4MP, colour night vision… the labels pile up fast. This guide cuts through the noise so you buy what your home or shop actually needs.

1. The four types of CCTV cameras (in plain words)

Most cameras you will be offered fall into four families:

  • Dome cameras — the round, ceiling-mounted ones you see in shops. Discreet, hard to tell which way they point, good for indoors.
  • Bullet cameras — the cylindrical ones on walls and gates. Visible (which itself deters trouble), better for long outdoor distances.
  • PTZ cameras — pan-tilt-zoom units that can rotate and zoom, usually controlled from a phone or monitor. One PTZ can cover what three fixed cameras would, but costs more.
  • Wi-Fi / smart cameras — small plug-in cameras that connect to your home Wi-Fi and phone app. Easiest to install, best for renters and single rooms.

A typical Delhi NCR home does well with 2–4 domes or Wi-Fi cameras. A shop usually wants a dome over the cash counter, a bullet at the entrance, and one covering the stock area.

2. Resolution: what 2MP, 4MP and 4K really mean

  • 2MP (1080p) — fine for identifying people inside a room or shop.
  • 4MP / 5MP — the current sweet spot: clear faces at gate distance, readable number plates in good light.
  • 4K (8MP) — worth it only for large areas like warehouses or parking lots; needs more storage.

Higher resolution also means more hard-disk space. A 4-camera 4MP setup recording 24×7 fills a 1TB drive in roughly 2–3 weeks.

3. Night vision and colour at night

Delhi NCR's dusty air and long winter smog reduce infrared range. Look for:

  • IR range of 20–30 metres for outdoor cameras.
  • Full-colour night vision (warm-light LEDs) if you need to identify clothing or vehicle colour at night — very useful at shop entrances.

4. Wired (DVR/NVR) vs Wi-Fi cameras

  • Wired systems record to a DVR (analogue/HD) or NVR (IP cameras). More reliable, keep recording even if internet drops, better for shops and full-home coverage.
  • Wi-Fi cameras are quick to install and great for one or two rooms, but depend on your router and power. During NCR's summer power cuts, a wired system on a small UPS keeps recording while Wi-Fi cameras go dark.

Many of our customers mix both: wired for the perimeter, one Wi-Fi camera inside for a quick phone check.

5. New 2026 rules every buyer should know

The Government of India has notified mandatory Essential Requirements for CCTV cameras: hardware security testing at accredited labs is now required, and government departments can only buy certified models — over 500 models have been certified so far (PIB, March 2026). Even as a private buyer, this matters: cheap unbranded cameras with unknown firmware are a real privacy risk. Buy brands that publish security updates, and always change the default password on day one.

If you run a PG, hostel or rental property in Delhi, note that local rules increasingly require CCTV at entry/exit points with 30–45 days of recording backup — plan your hard-disk size accordingly.

6. A simple buying checklist

  1. Count the spots you need to watch (entrance, cash counter, parking, back door).
  2. Decide wired vs Wi-Fi per spot.
  3. Choose 4MP for gates and outdoor areas; 2MP is enough indoors.
  4. Size storage for at least 15–30 days of recording.
  5. Budget for a small UPS so cameras keep working through power cuts.
  6. Insist on a demo on your own phone before paying.

FAQ

Which CCTV camera is best for home? For most homes, 2–4 MP dome or Wi-Fi cameras covering the entrance, lobby and balcony are enough. Add a bullet camera for the gate or parking.

How many types of CCTV cameras are there? Four main types: dome, bullet, PTZ (motorised) and Wi-Fi/smart cameras. Most setups mix two or three types.

Do CCTV cameras work without internet? Yes. Wired DVR/NVR systems record locally without internet. Internet is only needed for viewing on your phone remotely.

How long does footage stay recorded? Depends on hard-disk size and camera count. A 1TB drive with four 4MP cameras typically holds 2–3 weeks.
